It was summer of 2008 Waikiki, Hawaii. Sitting on the beach with some friends I wondered if it was going to be a great day to surf or simply just a day to relax in the sun. The decision was to relax and enjoy the beauty of my home and playground. While relaxing I had actually taken the time to look around and take notice of my surroundings. Not that I had never done that before, but had taken notice of my entire surroundings. The most amazing thing that caught my attention was the amount of grass mats, body boards, inner tubes and floats being discarded or just left behind by our visitors as they were leaving the beach. In an instant I wondered, what I could make for people to take home from Waikiki out of all this soon to be trash. My immediate conclusion was to recycle and create something beautiful while helping keep our beaches, oceans and landfills free of non biodegradable waste.
The journey began with ocean front resorts and hotels to see if we could come up with a way to establish a means of collection for recycling. The “Waikiki Outrigger” was the first hotel to say yes. They couldn’t wait to help, after all this was a “Win Win” situation for all. The “Outrigger” became our first collection and recycling account. A chain reaction started and soon we had several accounts and so the birth of Kini beach evolved right from the sands of my own backyard.
Kini Beach is an environmentally friendly business that manufactures by hand, products made from 99% recycled materials all of which are one of a kind and unique. Our current product line is made up of stylish beach totes and SUP (stand up paddle) covers.
In addition we have managed to rescue in excess of 6000 cubic yards of PVC, Styrofoam and other plastics. We are actively involved with environmentalist groups aiding in clean up of reef projects and ocean contaminants. Also, through combined efforts Kini Beach and “Surfers Healing” (a non- profit foundation for children with Autism) were able to create a unique program for autistic children of Hawaii. From our very own recycled materials, rewards are made for autistic children participating in Surfers Healing surf camps across the seaboard.
With your continued support and our love for the environment we look forward to a strong diversified relationship with the world. We not only continue to make our products in Hawaii but have now begun our new chapter of innovations in San Diego, California.
